Jamaica Food Kitchen

Sonya Doty and her husband Tim visit the beautiful island of Jamaica for an annual vacation each February.  While soaking up sun and avoiding snow is important, they also give back to the community during their visits.  This year they provided toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss to over 100 kids and adults through St. Anthony’s Kitchen and Get Kids to School Program, located in Negril, Jamaica.

St. Anthony’s Kitchen opened in 2010, “serving the needy poor in Negril.”  The soup kitchen, sponsored by Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Church, and the Rotary Clubs of Western Jamaica serves a hot lunch to approximately 150 people each Monday thru Friday from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. In addition to hot meals, the cooks prepare a small breakfast for the children (approximately 50/day) and volunteers do some tutoring before lunch.

More recently, St. Anthony’s started the Get Kids to School program.  For children who would otherwise be unable to afford to attend school, this program provides uniforms, school supplies, and other necessities.  There are two paid staff and a volunteer staff of about twelve.
